Based around Chinese New Year and released to celebrate the recent start of the Year of the Dog, Pragmatic Play released Lucky New Year recently, and it’s (unsurprisingly, given the theme) one of the most colourful slots we’ve seen so far this year.

A five reel, 25 payline game that is playable from 25p to £125 a spin on all compatible desktop, mobile, and tablet devices, Lucky New Year has become known for its colossal symbols and streak re-spin feature, but there’s a lot more to this game too.Starting with the design, Lucky New Year isn’t really defying convention much here, instead opting for a fairly traditional approach to the design of a Chinese themed slot, of which we’ve seen a multitude over the years.Lower values are represented by playing card symbols, which is a shame, because there is definitely enough imagery within the theme to not have to settle for filler symbols.There’s more to like about the higher value symbols though, with oranges, firecrackers, and a dragon amongst the symbols. The latter is the most lucrative symbol here, paying 20 times your stake for five on a payline.
Gameplay
The Golden tree is the scatter symbol here, and if you land it three times on a payline, you’ll trigger the Free Spins Feature.You get five spins here, with 3×3 large symbols spinning on the middle three reels to offer some big wins if you’re lucky.Land six or more lantern symbols and you’ll trigger the Money Respin Feature, the lantern symbols (which have cash amounts on them) are held for three respins, once you’re done with this feature, which can retrigger, you will win all the cash amounts shown on the screen.A fun game with some excellent features, Lucky New Year is worthy of some attention.
