Two of William Hill’s subsidiaries, Mr Green and Evoke have been issued fines by the Swedish regulator Spelinspektionen, SEK 1million and SEK 450,000, respectively due to a breach of Swedish gambling obligation. The fines issued were due to ‘under-reporting or incorrect reporting. Every six months operators holding a Swedish license must report information required by Spelkinspektionen. It appears that both the William Hill-owned companies failed to deliver on the terms of the license agreement.

Not Technically Possible

Both Mr Green and Evoke appealed the fine by urging Spelinspektionen to reconsider after it had not been ‘technically possible’ to submit the information at the time but has since submitted the required information, however, Spelinspektonen did not receive it.Although some of the information was delivered in December 2021, and again in March 2022, on review, the information differed on several points that the company had previously reported. Both licensees admitted technical issues had resulted in the differing accounts and terminology submitted to the regulator. One example, they said it was unclear if a customer had deposited on multiple occasions and had reached their deposit limit be classed as one customer or several? Combined totals were also submitted instead of an individual.

No Excuse

The regulator did point both companies failed to report the necessary information required, however, did acknowledge due to technical issues was impossible at the time, but, this was no excuse for not having the capability to report accurately. The regulator said, “Spelinspektonien considers that the lack of reporting obligation has been going on for a long time and on a total of five different occasions, and the information has nevertheless been provided despite technical difficulties has subsequently proved to be incorrect.“There is thus no indication that the infringement will be repeated.”Although the infringements were not that serious, the fact that they had continued for a long time deemed the severity of the fines to both Mr Green and Evoke.
