It represents a true industry hot topic at the moment, as responsible gambling has been put under the spotlight. In an attempt to alleviate user concern, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced a new policy to counteract “gambling-related harm” within the UK.
Responsible Gambling Strategy
Dubbed the National Responsible Gambling Strategy, what it will address is irresponsible gambling practices, with industry regulators, trade bodies, gambling operators, and government figures all coming together to address the matter.
Gambling related issues
What the newly published policy sets out to do, with it having a three year timeline in place, is reduce gambling-related issues, encourage gambling responsibility, and implementing the protection of vulnerable players. In a pre-arranged statement, the UKGC stated that the new initiative is being implemented across all gambling formats, with the new documentation representing “a call to action” according to Christopher Kelly (RGSB Chairman). Speaking independently on the new measures, he also said that, “what is being presented should look to build on progress already made within the realm of responsible gambling”.
One vision
The new measures are being widely lauded by the industry, as many felt that it was about time that the major casino names stepped up to tackle the problem. However, it has been noted that the vision is a big one; with many seeing that there are various speed bumps in the road for the new initiative to face. In the months to come it is clear that the UKGC is going to need to win round several key industry entities, should the end goal for the new policy be considered achievable.
