It’s safe to say, Social Media plays a huge part in many people’s lives today, the sheer volume of people using Social Media platforms is huge. Twitter, one of the biggest platforms have teamed up with The UK Gambling Commission in a bid to educate users around the problems of gambling related harm.

Awareness

Twitter are to make their users aware of different methods in which safety tools and settings can be adjusted for an individual account, you can choose to be less exposed to gambling related messaging and advertisements.Concerns were raised by the Commission around the amount of digital advertising, which may be seen by vulnerable adults, young people and children. The new guidance will in part be a staring point for Social Media platforms to address the problem. Users can ‘Manage Interests’ within a profile, turn off notifications, use the mute feature and limit the amount of betting advertisements.Head of Public Policy for Twitter Katy Minshall said,“ Improving the health of the public conversation is our overall mission as is ensuring those on the service feel safe and supported. “ With that in mind, we’re continuing to enforce our policies, specifically around prohibited and restricted ad content as well as assessing the eligibility of ads on our service – these policies apply to all advertisers and advertisements on Twitter.”Twitter are so far the first to work alongside the UKGC, but the regulator does have plans to work closely with other Social media platforms with similar guidance plans.Katy Minshall went on to say, “ We also continue to work closely with the industry partners on tools to support their responsible advertising priorities. We’re happy to partner with the gambling Commission in providing those on Twitter with information on the tools and controls they can use to manage their experience.”
