The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has written to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking for a clear roadmap as to when casinos and betting shops can reopen after yet another lengthy lockdown.Michael Dugher has highlighted betting shops and casinos should be able to reopen at the same time as other businesses within the sector.

Clear and Consistent

After the speed of the vaccine rollout, he urged Boris Johnson to consider the gambling sector as the country once again emerges from the lockdown. Boris Johnson is expected to make an announcement today on the easing of lockdown restrictions and allow businesses time to plan for future reopening. He also suggested the approach over the next few months be clear and consistent across all sectors.

Equal Opportunity

The BGC stated the 44,000 staff employed across the betting shops and casinos in the UK must be given equal opportunity to reopen along with other areas of the economy. Moreover, the reopening of betting shops and casinos will further enhance the economical recovery in the UK.Anti-Covid measures were safely in place after the first lockdown and Mr. Dugher explained most betting shops were able to reopen after implementing the highest safety standards within their premises for the protection of customers and staff.

No More Curfews

The land-based casino industry has taken a particularly hard hit after they were forced to close in March 2020. When restrictions were lifted, Draconian measures set out by the government meant they had a 10 pm curfew and an alcohol ban which had a detrimental effect on the industry. Mr. Dugher insisted premises should reopen at the same time as other businesses including pubs, and the curfew and alcohol restrictions scrapped as these measures do not work. The virus is here, and living and managing safety around it is equal to the reopening of business in the sector. Opening up betting shops and casinos will have a positive effect on building back the economy after the devastating effects of lockdown continue. Employees in the betting and casino sector deserve a level playing field giving the same opportunities across the board.
