A court heard this week how Jalal Uddin, 47, who worked as a chef in London, argued violently with his wife, Asma Begum, which resulted in her fatal stabbing.Jurors at the Old Bailey heard how the attack was so violent the pathology team found it hard to establish how many wounds he had inflicted to her face and hands.
‘Angry Indian’
Having moved from Bangladesh, the couple married in 2007 and lived in a flat in London. Uddin, who was known to have a gambling addiction worked in an Indian Restaurant in the city. Locals and staff members at William Hill where he regularly gambled named him the ‘Angry Indian’, as he would repeatedly kick machines if he lost.In 2016, Mrs Begum reported her husband for verbal and violent abuse. She said he would beat her if they rowed about money or hit her if she refused to hand over her house keeping for him to gamble with.
Spiralling Debt
The fatal attack happened in January 2019, Uddin was in debt from a £16,000 bank loan, he had also lost £1,000 on FOBT’s, where staff at the William Hill branch witnessed.It has been reported by the sister of Mrs Begum, she had been hit the night previous to the fatal stabbing. She was stabbed so violently the blade snapped off, she died at the scene.Uddin pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder, the trial is ongoing.
