Online gaming operator 888 Holdings plc has announced plans to launch in Denmark and the newly regulated Romania after acquiring licences in both countries. In the first instance three 888 brands are being launched in Romania and Denmark having received authorisation. These are set to be 888casino, 888poker and 888sport.
Regulated Online gaming Market
Romania has only recently formed a regulated online gaming market and 888 are quick to get in on the action, having reportedly paid €3.1million in Romanian back taxes. The country’s regulators also granted licences to Betfair and PokerStars last week. Perhaps surprisingly, Ladbrokes and William Hill did not procure licences after pulling out of the Romanian market earlier this year.Itai Frieberger888 Holdings’ chief operating officer Itai Frieberger commended his staff as well as industry regulators in the two new countries. The 44-year-old said: “Thanks to the hard work of our team and the regulators involved, we are excited to offer our entertaining, secure and trusted gaming brands to players from Romania and Denmark.“Launching in two regulated markets concurrently is another testimony of our ability to leverage our regulated technology and knowhow in delivering our market-leading products. We are proud to offer the 888 marquee brands in these markets, reaffirming our strategy to become a dominant operator in global gaming regulations.”
Takeover
888 is currently battling with GVC Holdings in a takeover bid of rival firm bwin.party. GVC Holdings have submitted a higher offer but 888’s revised proposal means the operator’s bid remains the favourite.
